Kingdom: Security Features

Software security is not security software. Here we're concerned with topics like authentication, access control, confidentiality, cryptography, and privilege management.

Access Control: Anonymous LDAP Bind

Abstract
Without proper access control, executing an LDAP statement that contains a user-controlled value can allow an attacker to access unauthorized records.
Explanation
Executing LDAP queries under an anonymous bind, effectively without authentication, can allow an attacker to abuse a poorly configured LDAP environment.

Example 1: The following code creates the DirectoryEntry de using an anonymous bind.

...
de = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://ad.example.com:389/ou=People,dc=example,dc=com");
...

All LDAP queries executed against de will be performed without authentication and access control. An attacker may be able to manipulate one of these queries in an unexpected way to gain access to records that would otherwise be protected by the directory's access control mechanism.

desc.dataflow.java.access_control_anonymous_ldap_bind
Abstract
Without proper access control, executing an LDAP statement that contains a user-controlled value can provide an attacker with access to unauthorized records.
Explanation
Executing LDAP queries under an anonymous bind, effectively without authentication, can enable an attacker to abuse a poorly configured LDAP environment.

Example 1: The following code creates an anonymous bind if the user enters an empty password.

...
$ldapbind = ldap_bind ($ldap, $dn, $password = "" );
...

All subsequent LDAP queries executed via this connection are performed without authentication and access control. An attacker might manipulate one of these queries in an unexpected way to gain access to records that would otherwise be protected by the directory's access control mechanism.
