Kingdom: Input Validation and Representation
Input validation and representation problems ares caused by metacharacters, alternate encodings and numeric representations. Security problems result from trusting input. The issues include: "Buffer Overflows," "Cross-Site Scripting" attacks, "SQL Injection," and many others.
Dynamic Code Evaluation: Unsafe XMLHttpRequest
Abstract
Reliance on invalidated user supplied data to determine the destination of an XMLHttpRequest connection can allow an attacker to inject malicious scripts in the application's client-side code.
Explanation
Attackers can take advantage of cross-domain communication made possible by the Cross-Origin Resource Sharing specification. An XMLHttpRequest (XHR) call with unprotected parameters uses an input variable that can be controlled by a malicious attacker, subsequently modifying the target URL of the original XHR call. In the case where either part or all of the contents of the XHR response is rendered by browser, it will be rendered in the context of the calling domain; effectively allowing a malicious attacker to inject executable script into the website.
