Software security is not security software. Here we're concerned with topics like authentication, access control, confidentiality, cryptography, and privilege management.

Privacy Violation: Email Disclosure

Abstract
Disclosure of a personal email address can compromise an individual's identity, their privacy, and is in direct violation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Explanation
Disclosing personal email addresses constitutes a violation of an individual's privacy under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The EU GDPR replaces the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC, and is designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens' data privacy, and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy. The GDPR provides a framework for organizations on how to handle personal data.
According to GDPR Article 4, personal data "means any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person ('data subject'); an identifiable natural person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person."
Personal email addresses identify an individual and constitute personal data. Generic email addresses such as admin@somecompany.com or info@somecompany.com do not fall under GDPR as they do not identify a particular individual.
