Software security is not security software. Here we're concerned with topics like authentication, access control, confidentiality, cryptography, and privilege management.

Privacy Violation: Geolocation

Abstract
The target mobile application sends device geolocation data in a request to an external host.
Explanation
The mobile application includes coordinate data representing the device's geolocation in a request to an external host. A device's geolocation data is considered private information since it can be used to accurately pinpoint the location of the device.

While location data can be transmitted to an external host legitimately as part of the core functionality of an application, one must verify that the application has obtained proper authorization from the user to do so. An application that makes external requests that include device geolocation data must clearly enumerate the reasons for doing so to the user, especially if this data is sent to third-party vendors or advertisers. Failing to do so is a clear and unacceptable violation of the user's privacy.
