Kingdom: Security Features

Software security is not security software. Here we're concerned with topics like authentication, access control, confidentiality, cryptography, and privilege management.

Privacy Violation: Inconsistent Feedback

Abstract
When entering an invalid user name or password during a login, forgotten password or new user signup function, an application may provide meaningful feedback through a response discrepancy. For the potential attacker, this discrepancy increases the chances of a successful brute force attack against the site's authentication.
Explanation
Users expect applications to provide meaningful and user-friendly messages when there is a failure. But, when a login failure occurs due to incorrect credentials, it is important not to provide verbose errors/messages since it could provide an attacker with information on how the application authorizes users.
For example, consider an application that takes an email address and a password. If the application provides different error messages for a non-existent email address and an incorrect password, it will enable an attacker to submit multiple email addresses and learn about the ones that are actually registered to the application. Such brute force attacks can provide extra information that may enable an attacker to proceed further.
